Bearcats fall in first round of the NWC Tourney
Willamette keeps first two sets close, but drops the match 3-1
SPOKANE, Wash. — Whitworth defeated the Willamette volleyball team in four sets, 26-24, 29-27, 23-25, 25-6, on Friday at Whitworth Fieldhouse. This match marked the first round of the Northwest Conference tournament, with Whitworth advancing to the final. The Bearcats managed to capture the third set with a narrow two-point margin, but Whitworth's nine service aces and 51 kills led them to victory. Willamette's defense tallied 54 digs, providing some resistance, but ultimately fell short in what was the final game of the season for Willamette.
The first set commenced with an evenly matched battle between the Bearcats and Whitworth. Willamette's Katey Cramer and Emalia Freitas each secured early points, contributing to a back-and-forth exchange that kept the score close. Despite a series of service errors, the Bearcats managed a late surge with key kills by Lexie Scott and Freitas, which brought them level at 24-24. However, Whitworth edged ahead to claim the set, closing it with a 26-24 score.
Willamette mounted a mid-set surge to tie the score at 8-8 after trailing by five, fueled by effective kills from Freitas and Leina Chu. A subsequent sequence saw Willamette take the lead at 17-11 with a strong service run by Chelsea Velez, capitalizing on attack errors by Whitworth.
Despite the Bearcats' efforts to maintain the lead, including key kills by Scott and Cramer, Whitworth rallied to tie the score at multiple points late in the set. Ultimately, Whitworth capitalized on a late attack error from Freitas to win the second set 29-27.
Willamette demonstrated resilience in the third set, overcoming several ties and lead changes to secure a 25-23 victory against Whitworth. Caroline Jameson opened the scoring with a kill from Chu, setting the tone for the Bearcats' early 3-0 lead. Cramer contributed significantly with multiple kills, while Whitworth's errors helped Willamette maintain a narrow advantage.
As the set progressed, Whitworth rallied to level the score multiple times, but the Bearcats responded each time with crucial plays. Freitas and Scott made pivotal kills, keeping Willamette in contention. In the closing moments, Velez delivered the decisive kill, sealing the set with a final score of 25-23.
Willamette struggled to gain momentum in the fourth set, facing a dominant run by Whitworth early on. Scott managed to break the sequence with a kill, assisted by Chu, cutting the deficit slightly to 6-1. Despite efforts by Jameson, who recorded a kill later in the set to bring the score to 8-3, the Bearcats faced challenges in halting Whitworth's advances.
The home team's consistency in scoring, bolstered by a series of service aces and kills, proved overwhelming. Willamette's attempts to close the gap, like capitalizing on a Whitworth service error to make it 17-6, were not enough to turn the tide. Whitworth secured the set 25-6, concluding the game with a final score clearly in their favor.
The Bearcats hold a 12-12 overall record and are 10-6 in the Northwest Conference. Whitworth stands at 21-6 overall and 14-2 in Northwest Conference play.
