Bearcats confront Linfield Wildcats

McMINNVILLE, Ore. — Willamette fell to Linfield, 64-54, in a league matchup at Ted Wilson Gymnasium. The Bearcats were led by a third-quarter surge, scoring 20 points to close the gap, but ultimately couldn't overcome Linfield's 36-18 advantage. Despite forcing 17 turnovers, the Bearcats were unable to capitalize fully, scoring 13 points off those opportunities. The game remained tight until Linfield pulled away with a strong fourth quarter.
Willamette began the first quarter with effective defensive play, including a key block by Kaitlin Imai at 9:06. Riley Walden contributed significantly by scoring a jumper and assisting Peyton Gardner's 3-pointer, establishing momentum for the visiting team. Despite Linfield's efforts to stay competitive with their points in the paint, the Bearcats maintained control by capitalizing on turnovers and fast breaks. As the quarter progressed, Gardner added to the lead with a layup, extending the margin. A fast-break layup by Walden at further propelled Willamette ahead. Linfield took control early in the second quarter with a 6–0 run, including a three-pointer from Amelia Solt, extending their lead. The Bearcats' efforts to counter were hindered by shooting difficulties, as they converted only four field goals on 16 attempts. Despite Imai's defensive efforts with two steals, Linfield maintained momentum with efficient shooting and built a significant lead. Willamette fought back late in the quarter, highlighted by a three-pointer from Emma Floyd, assisted by Gardner. Gabbie Wilson contributed with a jumper, and Mattie Thompson added a layup with 1:01 remaining. However, Linfield's consistent offense kept them ahead, closing the quarter with a 32–22 lead.
The Bearcats capitalized on Linfield's turnovers and foul troubles in the third quarter, initiating a comeback with effective free-throw shooting. Daisy Boling-Schmidt and Imai both contributed crucial free throws early, helping to cut the deficit. Walden's defensive rebound followed by a pair of free throws at 00:22 brought the game within reach. Leia Mata's timely 3-pointer at 1:10 added momentum, pushing Willamette close to overtaking Linfield. The quarter ended with the Bearcats trailing narrowly, 43–42, setting up a competitive final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Bearcats began with a deficit, but a late surge narrowed the gap. Walden and Imai made crucial three-pointers, cutting into Linfield's lead. Despite defensive efforts, including a block by Walden, Linfield capitalized on turnovers to extend their advantage. In the closing minutes, Willamette's offense gained momentum with a 3-pointer from Wilson followed by another from Walden, trimming the Linfield lead. However, Linfield responded with steady free-throw shooting to maintain their edge. The quarter ended with a final score of 64–54 in favor of Linfield.
