Bearcats Show Grit in Tough Loss to Whitworth
Bearcats fall 7-0 to Pirates
SALEM, OR — The final box score may show a sweep, but the Willamette University women's tennis team proved on Saturday that they can go toe-to-toe with the best in the Northwest Conference. In a hard-fought match against the visiting Whitworth Pirates, the Bearcats were just a few points away from a very different result, falling 7-0 in a contest defined by several marathon sets.
The tone for the afternoon was set during doubles play. The #1 duo of Alexa de Crinis and Reese Beyrouty gave the Pirate pairing of Faith Kert and Clara Todd everything they could handle. The Bearcats forced a tie-breaker before ultimately falling in a narrow 7-6 (7-3) decision, showing the Salem crowd that they were ready for a fight.
That competitive fire carried over into singles play, where the Bearcats nearly pulled off massive upsets at the top of the lineup.
At #1 singles, Alexa de Crinis showcased incredible resilience. After dropping the first set 6-2 to Paige Oliver, de Crinis stormed back to take the second set 6-4. The ensuing pro-set tie-breaker was a back-and-forth thriller that had fans on the edge of their seats, eventually ending in a heartbreaking 11-9 victory for Whitworth.
The drama continued at the #3 spot, where Sofia Spencer looked poised for a victory after a dominant 6-3 opening set against Jordan Turner-Esposito. After the Pirate rallied to take the second, the match went to yet another tie-breaker. Spencer battled until the final point but narrowly missed the win with a 10-8 finish.
While Whitworth's depth proved a challenge in the remaining flights, the Bearcats saw solid efforts from Alicia Sola, who fought through a tough 6-4 opening set at #6 singles, and Eva Lief at #4.
Though the team win eluded them today, the Bearcats proved they have the stamina and the skill to compete in high-pressure situations. Willamette will look to take this momentum and "never-say-die" attitude into their next conference matchup as they continue their spring campaign.
