Bearcats battle in tough loss against Whitman
Bearcats battle through two three-set marathons but ultimately fall 7-0 to the Blues in home conference action.
SALEM, OR — The Willamette University Women's Tennis team faced a formidable challenge at home this weekend, dropping a 7-0 decision to the visiting Whitman Blues. While the final scoreline favored the visitors, the Bearcats displayed significant resilience, pushing one of the region's top programs to the limit in several tightly contested matches.
The afternoon began with a hard-fought doubles round. The No. 2 pairing of Eva Lief and Sofia Spencer provided the most competitive spark for the Bearcats, trading blows with Whitman's Jules Thompson and Bailey Bell before eventually falling 6-3. On the neighboring courts, the duos of Alexa de Crinis/Reese Beyrouty and Alicia Sola/Grace O'Steen both fell 6-2, giving the Blues the early momentum heading into singles play.
Despite trailing after doubles, the Bearcats refused to go down without a fight, highlighted by two thrilling three-set battles in the middle of the lineup.
At No. 3 singles, Sofia Spencer put on a clinical performance in the opening set, taking down Whitman's Gloria Lau 6-4. Lau managed to force a third-set tiebreak after a 6-4 win in the second. In the deciding 10-point tiebreaker, Spencer fought for every point, narrowly missing the upset in a 10-8 heartbreaker.
Similarly, at No. 4 singles, Eva Lief showed incredible poise. After dropping the first set 6-1 to Leah Lovato, Lief dominated the second set with a 6-1 victory of her own to force a tiebreaker. Like Spencer, Lief pushed her opponent to the brink before Lovato secured the match with a 10-5 win in the tiebreak.
Elsewhere in the lineup, Natalie Cruz battled at the No. 5 spot, picking up three games against Natalie Cruz, while Alexa de Crinis and Alicia Sola each found ways to get on the board against a high-powered Whitman attack.
While the result wasn't what the Salem faithful hoped for, the "never-quit" attitude shown by Spencer and Lief in their marathon matches provides plenty of optimism for the Bearcats as they continue their season.
The Bearcats will look to bounce back and carry that competitive energy into their next match as they continue Northwest Conference play.
