Bearcats Chop Down Loggers
Bearcats secure a 5-2 victory over Puget Sound behind dominant singles play and a gritty performance in doubles.
SALEM, OR – It was a great day to be a Bearcat at the tennis courts as the Willamette University women's tennis team put on a clinical performance, defeating the visiting Puget Sound Loggers 5-2. Combining veteran composure with explosive energy, Willamette defended their home turf and proved why they are a force to be reckoned with this season.
The afternoon started with the Bearcats looking to establish an early lead, and the No. 1 duo of Reese Beyrouty and Alexa de Crinis did exactly that. The pair looked in mid-season form, dismantling Puget Sound's Yamada and Buck in a swift 6-1 victory.
The battle for the doubles advantage came down to the wire at the No. 2 spot. Eva Lief and Sofia Spencer showed incredible heart, refusing to blink in a back-and-forth affair against Nicole Wilson and Frances English. The Bearcat duo eventually broke through to secure a 7-5 win, giving Willamette the crucial momentum heading into singles play.
With the lead in hand, Willamette went to work in the singles matches. Sofia Spencer provided the highlight of the day at the No. 3 position. In a nearly flawless performance, Spencer overwhelmed Bean Lowe, dropping only a single game in a 6-0, 6-1 masterclass.
At the top of the lineup, Alexa de Crinis continued her perfect day. After her doubles win, she stepped onto the No. 1 court and took down Kaylee Yamada in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, showcasing her ability to control the pace of the match. Eva Lief was equally impressive at No. 4, dispatching Nicole Wilson with a pair of 6-2 sets.
The most thrilling match of the afternoon occurred at the No. 5 spot. After splitting the first two sets, Katie Briggs found herself in a high-stakes tiebreaker against Pearl Buck. Displaying nerves of steel, Briggs outlasted her opponent to take the match 6-3, 3-6, 10-7, drawing loud cheers from the home crowd.
While the Loggers managed to scrap for wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, the day belonged to the Bearcats. The 5-2 final score reflects a complete team effort and a statement win for the program.
