Women’s Tennis Falls To Salisbury
Sofia Spencer and Eva Lief secure singles victories
SALEM, OR – It was a day of high-intensity tennis and resilient performances at home as the Willamette University women's tennis team took on the visiting Salisbury University Sea Gulls. While the Sea Gulls ultimately walked away with a 5-2 victory, the Bearcats proved they have the heart to compete with anyone, highlighted by two gritty wins in the middle of the singles lineup.
The afternoon began with a competitive doubles round. Although Salisbury managed to sweep the three matches to earn the doubles point, the Bearcat duo of Alexa de Crinis and Reese Beyrouty pushed the Sea Gulls' top pair to the absolute limit. In a back-and-forth battle at the No. 1 spot, de Crinis and Beyrouty fell just short in a 7-5 thriller that showcased the high level of play Willamette is capable of reaching.
When the match shifted to singles, the Bearcats found their rhythm and began to claw back.
Sofia Spencer provided a major spark at the No. 3 position. Facing off against Salisbury's Olivia Hall, Spencer displayed incredible poise in the big moments. She stayed aggressive to take a tight first set 7-5 and maintained that momentum to close out the match with a 6-4 win in the second, putting the Bearcats on the board.
The most dramatic performance of the day came from Eva Lief at No. 4 singles. After dropping a tough first set 2-6 to Evelyn Whiteside, Lief refused to back down. She completely flipped the script in the second set, winning 6-2 to force a decisive 10-point tiebreaker. In the high-pressure tiebreak, Lief was clinical, outlasting Whiteside 10-5 to secure a hard-earned victory for the Crimson and Gold.
In other singles action, Alexa de Crinis and Reese Beyrouty faced stiff opposition at the top of the ladder against a strong Salisbury contingent. At No. 6, Katie Briggs battled through a very competitive opening set, falling 7-5 before eventually dropping the second.
While the team result wasn't what the Bearcats were looking for, the individual performances of Spencer and Lief—along with the narrow margin in top-flight doubles—provide plenty of optimism for the matches ahead.
The Bearcats will look to build on these hard-fought victories as they continue their season, carrying the momentum of their singles triumphs into their next outing.
