Bearcats Fall 6–1 at Whitman
Katie Briggs earns single win
WALLA WALLA, WA – In a contest defined by hard-fought sets and a display of top-tier talent at the top of the lineup, the Willamette University women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Whitman College on Saturday. Despite the final score, the Bearcats walked away with several momentum-building performances, including a statement win at the No. 1 doubles position.
The afternoon began with a thrill for the Bearcat faithful during doubles play. Alexa de Crinis and Reese Beyrouty proved why they are a force to be reckoned with at the No. 1 spot, outlasting Whitman's Nana Vang and Renata Rosell in a 6-4 battle. The duo's chemistry was on full display as they earned the break they needed to secure the victory.
However, Whitman managed to take the doubles point by narrow margins. Eva Lief and Sofia Spencer fought valiantly at the No. 2 spot before falling 6-4, while Alicia Sola and Grace O'Steen were defeated 6-3 at the No. 3 position.
In singles action, the Bearcats faced a deep Whitman roster, but the grit of the "Cardinal and Gold" was evident throughout the lineup. The highlight of the singles round came at the No. 6 position, where Katie Briggs delivered a masterclass in consistency. Briggs handled Whitman's Michelle Deng in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-3, to put a point on the board for Willamette and finish her day on a high note.
At the top of the order, Alexa de Crinis and Reese Beyrouty faced stiff competition from Whitman's Julia Longpre and Nana Vang, while Eva Lief put up a spirited fight in the second set of her No. 4 singles match before falling 6-3, 6-3.
While the road trip to Walla Walla proved challenging, the Bearcats' ability to secure a win at the premier doubles flight and depth scoring from Briggs provides plenty of optimism as the team continues its Northwest Conference schedule.
The Bearcats will look to build on these individual successes as they return home to focus on their next conference opponent. They will face Whitworth University on Sunday, March 8th at 10:00 am, competing as the away team.
