Lewis & Clark Tops Willamette, 6-1
Bearcats with strong doubles performance
SALEM, Ore. – In a match defined by an electric start and several hard-fought marathons, the Willamette University women's tennis team fell to the visiting Lewis & Clark Pioneers 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. While the final scoreline favored the Pioneers, the Bearcats gave the home crowd plenty to cheer for, highlighted by a dominant display in doubles play and two singles battles that went down to the wire.
The afternoon began with a surge of momentum for Willamette. The Bearcats came out swinging in doubles, clinching the overall doubles point with two gritty victories at the top of the lineup.
At #1 doubles, the duo of Alexa de Crinis and Reese Beyrouty showed incredible poise, outlasting Susanna Anand and Charlotte Makoni in a 7-5 thriller. The momentum continued at the #2 spot, where Eva Lief and Sofia Spencer played clinical tennis to defeat Maya Curry and Emma Loucks 6-4. Although the Pioneers took the #3 doubles match, the Bearcats headed into singles play with a 1-0 lead and all the momentum.
However, the Pioneers responded with a strong surge in singles play. Despite the shift in momentum, the Bearcats refused to go down without a fight, particularly in the middle and bottom of the lineup.
The match of the day took place at #3 singles, where Sofia Spencer looked poised for an upset. After cruising to a 6-2 win in the first set, Spencer engaged in a tactical war with Anna English. English managed to take the second set 7-5, forcing a decisive 10-point tiebreaker. In a back-and-forth battle, Spencer narrowly missed the mark, falling 10-6.
History repeated itself at #6 singles, where Katie Briggs displayed immense heart. After dropping a close second set, Briggs also pushed her match to a tiebreaker. Like Spencer, Briggs battled until the final points, eventually falling in a 10-6 heartbreaker to Emma Loucks.
At #4 singles, Eva Lief stayed competitive throughout, pushing Maya Curry in a 6-4, 6-3 contest, while Reese Beyrouty put up a valiant effort at the #2 spot before falling 6-1, 6-3.
Winning the doubles point against a tough conference rival like Lewis & Clark is a significant building block for this young squad, and the grit shown in the three-set marathons bodes well for the remainder of the season.
The Bearcats will look to carry that doubles dominance and fighting spirit into their next conference match as they continue their campaign in the Northwest Conference.
The next challenge for the Bearcats is Puget Sound University on February 28th at 11:00 am. They will compete as the away team in this event.
