Bearcats Show Gritty Effort vs Bruins
Katie Briggs Dominates at No. 6
SALEM, Ore. — In a hard-fought Northwest Conference clash at home, the Willamette University women's tennis team showcased flashes of brilliance and resilience despite falling 6-1 to a strong George Fox University squad.
While the final team score favored the Bruins, the Bearcats gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about, highlighted by a dominant shutout in singles play and a thrilling performance in the doubles round.
Doubles Action Sets the Tone
The afternoon began with a highly competitive doubles session. The Bearcat duo of Grace O'Steen and Alicia Sola provided the highlight of the round at the No. 3 spot, putting on a clinical display to defeat George Fox's Nicole Schnurbusch and Audrey Gardner, 6-4.
At No. 2 doubles, the team of Eva Lief and Sofia Spencer nearly pulled off a massive upset. The pair pushed Shanah Denham and Juhree Kizziar to the absolute limit, battling through a back-and-forth set before eventually falling in a heart-pounding 8-6 tiebreaker (7-3). The narrow margin of defeat at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles proved that the Bearcats can go toe-to-toe with the top of the conference.
Briggs Commands the Court
As the match transitioned to singles, the story of the day was Katie Briggs. Competing at the No. 6 position, Briggs put on a masterclass of precision and focus. She dismantled her opponent, Abigail Gonzales, without dropping a single game, earning a perfect "double bagel" victory of 6-0, 6-0. It was a commanding performance that served as a testament to the depth and talent in the Willamette lineup.
Elsewhere in singles, the Bearcats continued to fight for every point. At the No. 4 spot, Eva Lief stayed within striking distance throughout her match against Schnurbusch, ultimately falling 6-3, 6-4 in a contest that was much closer than the final score suggested. At the top of the ticket, Alexa de Crinis showed significant improvement in her second set at No. 1 singles, pushing Shanah Denham before falling 6-1, 6-4.
