O’Steen Grabs Gritty Victory
Bearcats Battle Tough Against College of Idaho but fall 6-1
SALEM, OR – In a contest defined by narrow margins and marathon tiebreakers, the Willamette women's tennis team showed incredible heart on their home courts Saturday, ultimately falling 6-1 to a strong College of Idaho squad. Despite the final score, the Bearcats pushed the Yotes to the limit in several matches, proving they have the competitive fire to hang with anyone in the region.
The highlight of the day for the Bearcat faithful came at the No. 6 singles spot, where Grace O'Steen delivered a performance defined by resilience. After dropping the first set 2-6 to the Yotes' Kylie Barrus, O'Steen refused to go away. She adjusted her game and stormed back to take the second set 6-2, forcing a decisive pro-set tiebreaker. In a back-and-forth thriller that had the Salem crowd on their feet, O'Steen showed nerves of steel to edge out Barrus 11-9, securing a hard-earned point for Willamette.
The Bearcats nearly added another point at the top of the flight. At No. 1 singles, Alexa de Crinis played a masterpiece of a first set, taking it 6-4 against Hristina Ljuba. After Ljuba claimed the second set to force a tiebreaker, the two engaged in a marathon battle for the ages. De Crinis fought off multiple match points before eventually falling in a heartbreaking 12-10 tiebreaker. It was a statement performance from de Crinis, showing she can compete with the best players in the circuit.
The competitive spirit started early in doubles play. While the Yotes managed to sweep the doubles point, the Bearcats didn't make it easy. The No. 1 duo of de Crinis and Reese Beyrouty battled to a 7-5 loss, coming just a few points shy of an upset. At the No. 3 spot, Alicia Sola and O'Steen also played a tight set, eventually falling 6-4.
In other singles action, Reese Beyrouty showed flashes of brilliance at the No. 4 spot, taking four games in a competitive opening set before falling to Kinsey Lockhart. Alicia Sola also put up a fight at No. 5, picking up three games in her opening frame against Alyssa Johnson.
While the result didn't go Willamette's way, the grit displayed—particularly in the three-set battles at the top and bottom of the lineup—provides plenty of momentum for the Bearcats as they continue their season. This is a team that refuses to quit, and fans can expect that "never say die" attitude to pay dividends in the matches to come.
The Bearcats will look to build on O'Steen's victory and de Crinis's marathon effort as they prepare for their next outing.
