Bearcats Claw Past Linfield in Nail-Biting 4-3 Victory
MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Willamette Bearcats women's tennis team emerged victorious from a thrilling, hard-fought match against the Linfield Wildcats on Saturday, securing a 4-3 win in a contest that went down to the wire. While the Wildcats put up a strong fight, the Bearcats' determination proved too much to overcome in this Northwest Conference showdown.
The match started with a strong showing from Linfield's doubles teams. Emma Tuttle and Kaitlynn Canubida dominated their match, securing a decisive 6-0 win for the Wildcats. However, Willamette's Gio Horner and Sofia Spencer battled back in a closely contested match, taking #2 Doubles 7-6(7-3), and Ruby Thompson and Marie Tarrab added another win for Willamette, securing the doubles point for the Bearcats heading into singles play.
The team split the singles matches in half, with the Wildcats winning at #1, #2, and #3 Singles and the Bearcats taking the matches at #4, #5, and #6. After Ruby Thompson and Alicia Sola won their matches to even the team score at 3-3, Gio Horner defeated Sundi King 6-2, 6-3 to give the Bearcat the victory.
Women's Tennis returns to the road next weekend when they travel to Portland to play two matches against Lewis & Clark College on Saturday, March 15th, and then to Tacoma to face the University of Puget Sound on Saturday, March 16th.
