Four Bearcats Win in Singles at Willamette Four-Way Invitational

SALEM, ORE. -- Four Willamette University women's tennis players each recorded a win during the final day of the Willamette Four-Way Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 21. The tournament was played at the Willamette University Tennis Courts and the Salem Tennis and Swim Club.

Winners for Willamette in singles were Mikaila Smith (Fr., Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS), Ashley Evans (Fr., Canby, OR/Canby Union HS), Emily Guimont (Jr., El Dorado Hills, CA/Folsom HS) and Sierra Pena-Venegas (Fr., Salem, OR/West Salem HS).

Smith defeated Taylor Barnes of George Fox University at #2 singles, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3), in a super tie-breaker played instead of a third set. Evans won against Shebly Arnold of GFU at #6 singles, 6-2, 6-3. In #7 singles, Guimont rolled past Danielle Wicks of Pacific University, 6-1, 6-1. At #8 singles, Pena-Venegas downed Lexi Normine of Pacific, 6-3, 6-1.

At #1 doubles, Denise Poltavski (Sr., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) and Smith earned one victory and recorded one loss on Sunday. They defeated Andrea Motley and Catrina Kwong from George Fox, 8-4.Kaitlyn Lomartire and Jelena Vidovic of Pacific downed Poltavski and Smith later in the day, 8-3.

Four athletes were included in each of eight singles flights, while four teams were competed in each of four doubles flights. The first two rounds of singles and the first round of doubles were played on Saturday. The third round of singles and the final two rounds of doubles were completed on Sunday.

All of the singles and doubles flights had an undefeated winner with a 3-0 record.

Winners of singles flights were: #1 singles - Kaitlyn Lomartire (Pacific); #2 singles - Jelena Vidovic (Pacific); #3 singles - Marisa Kume (Linfield); #4 singles - Basia Kopecka (Linfield); #5 singles - Marisa Doveri (Linifeld); #6 singles - Courtney Motsul (Linfield); #7 singles - Gretchen Jernstedt (Linfield); #8 singles - Sierra Lemon (Linfield).

Winners of doubles flights were: #1 doubles - Ella Riddle and Mackenzie Fraser (Linfield); #2 doubles - Mai Kobayashi and Sidney Smith (Pacific); #3 doubles - Courtney Hammagren and Gretchen Jernstedt (Linfield); #4 doubles - Marisa Doveri and Basia Kopecka (Linfield).

Willamette will compete at the 2014 ITA Small College Northwest Regional next weekend at Whitman College in Walla Wall, Wash. The tournament will be held from Friday, Sept. 26 through Sunday, Sept. 28.
