Willamette Hosts First Day of Four-Way Tournament in Women's Tennis

SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's tennis team hosted the first day of the Willamette Four-Way Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the WU Tennis Courts and the Salem Tennis and Swim Club. The second day of the two-day tournament, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21, starting at 9 a.m. (PDT).

Sunday's schedule includes the third round of singles and the final two rounds of doubles. Athletes are competing in a round robin schedule within each of eight singles flights and four doubles flights.

Denise Poltavski (Sr., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) of Willamette went 1-1 at #1 singles on Saturday. Ella Riddle of Linfield defeated Poltavski, 6-3, 7-5, in the first round, but Poltavski rebounded with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Chantelle Hadeed of Linfield.

Mikaila Smith (Fr., Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS) also went 1-1 for the Bearcats. Jelena Vidovic of Pacific held off a comeback effort to down Smith, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). Smith then outlasted Courtney Hammagren of Linfield, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) in a super tie-breaker played instead of a third set.

At #7 singles, Emily Guimont (Jr., El Dorado Hills, CA/Folsom HS) of WU earned one win and one loss. She opened the tournament by edging out Ilsa Teppo from George Fox, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3). In the second round, Gretchen Jernstedt of Linfield defeated Guimont, 6-4, 6-0.

In #1 doubles, Linfield's team of Riddle and Mackenzie Fraser downed Poltavski and Smith of WU, 8-4. At #2 doubles, Hadeed and Taylor Barnes of GFU defeated Guimont and Alicia Sohn (So., Tustin, CA/Arnold O. Beckman HS) from Willamette, 8-2.
