George Fox Wins Two Matches with Bearcats, 6-3 and 8-1
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University and George Fox University played a pair of non-conference women's tennis matches on Saturday, Oct. 11. George Fox won the first match, 6-3, and took the second match, 8-1. GFU is 2-0 on the season, while the Bearcats are 0-2.
Poltavski and Smith each Earn a Victory at #1 Singles for Willamette
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University and George Fox University played a pair of non-conference women's tennis matches on Saturday, Oct. 11. George Fox won the first match, 6-3, and took the second match, 8-1. GFU is 2-0 on the season, while the Bearcats are 0-2.
Denise Poltavski (Sr., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) and Mikaila Smith (Fr., Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS) each won a match at #1 singles. Poltavski defeated Catrina Kwong of GFU at #1 singles in the first match. Smith downed Chantelle Hadeed at #1 singles in the second match, 6-1, 6-2.
Poltavski and Smith also combined to win #1 doubles in the opening match, as they moved past Andrea Motley and Ali Diehl, 8-3. Smith finished 2-0 on the day in singles, as she recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Motley at #2 singles in the first match.
GFU held a 2-1 advantage following the double competition in the first match. Atlhough Poltavski and Smith prevailed at #1 doubles, the Bruins earned an 8-3 win by Kwong and Taylor Barnes over Alicia Sohn (So., Tustin, CA/Arnold O. Beckman HS) and Emily Guimont (Jr., El Dorado Hills, CA/Folsom HS) at #2 doubles
At #3 doubles, the George Fox team of Hadeed and Shelby Arnold were victorious, 8-2, over Ashley Evans (Fr., Canby, OR/Canby HS) and Katie Adams (Fr., McLean, VA/American International School).
The Bruins achieved wins from #3 singles through #6 singles to keep the Bearcats from rallying in the opening match. The #6 singles match featured a close battle between Ilsa Teppo of GFU and Adams of WU. Teppo was able to hold off Adams to win by identical scores of 6-4 in both sets.
In the second match of the day, Smith's win was the only victory for Willamette. The Bruins registered a trio of 8-3 wins in the doubles competition, and then achieved five straight-set wins in singles from the #2 position down to #6.
Saturday's matches concluded the fall season for the Bearcats. They will return to action during the second semester, which will include the official Northwest Conference schedule.
