Three Willamette Women's Tennis Players are Named ITA Scholar-Athletes
SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Three Willamette University womenâ??s tennis players have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the 2008-09 season, as selected by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Overall, a total of 434 women's tennis players from throughout NCAA Division III were chosen for the award.
SKILLMAN, N.J. -- Three Willamette University womens tennis players have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the 2008-09 season, as selected by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Overall, a total of 434 women's tennis players from throughout NCAA Division III were chosen for the award.
The Willamette student-athletes who earned ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition were Alyssa Morrison (Jr., Anacortes, WA/Anacortes HS), Samia Kay Munayirji (Fr., Eagle, ID/Eagle HS) and Jamie Slonaker (So., Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS). Morrison is majoring in Rhetoric and Media Studies. Munayirji and Slonaker are undecided regarding their majors. It was the second consecutive year that Morrison and Slonaker earned Scholar-Athlete honors.
In order to receive the ITA Scholar-Athlete award, student-athletes were required to achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average (4.0 scale) during the 2008-09 academic year. They also had to be letterwinners on their respective teams and had to attend their current colleges or universities for at least one full academic year by the end of the season.
Head Coach Becky Roberts recently completed her ninth season at Willamette by leading the Bearcats to a Northwest Conference Tournament berth. Willamette went 7-9 (5th place tie) in the NWC during the regular season and concluded the year with an 8-13 overall record.
Morrison and Slonaker combined for a 5-3 record as doubles partners. Morrison was 12-7 overall in doubles . Slonaker finished 8-8 in doubles to go with an 8-7 record in singles.
Alyssa Morrison has received ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition for the second consecutive season.
