SALEM, Ore. — Willamette University and Whitman College played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Sparks Field. The Bearcats struck first with a goal in the opening half, capitalizing on one of their four shots on target. Despite facing persistent pressure, Willamette's goalie recorded eight saves, withstanding a barrage of 15 shots from Whitman, who equalized in the second half.
The first half commenced with both teams actively seeking an early advantage. The Bearcats' defensive line, anchored by goalkeeper Siera Edwards, effectively managed Whitman's initial attempts. In the 41st minute, Willamette capitalized on an offensive opportunity as Gabriella Weis found the net with an assist from Natalie Rodriguez-De La Torre, breaking the deadlock. Despite Whitman's efforts, including a saved shot by Edwards late in the half, the Bearcats maintained control. The half closed with Willamette leading 1-0, setting a positive tone heading into the next phase of play.
The second half began with Whitman leveling the score at 1-1 with a goal from Emoree Lash in the 55th minute. Despite the equalizer, Edwards played a crucial role in maintaining the draw, recording multiple saves, notably against shots by Leah Barnes and Emoree Lash. The Bearcats attempted to regain the lead through efforts from Claire Warthen and Erica Stotts, but their shots went wide or were saved.
