SALEM, Ore. — Willamette University secured a decisive 3-0 victory over George Fox University on Wednesday at Sparks Field. The home team dominated the match, with goals in both halves, including a key game-winner in the first. Willamette's defense held strong, led by their goalkeeper Siera Edwards, who recorded a shutout with three saves, while the team's offense tallied 17 shots, with seven on target.
The first half began with Willamette asserting early pressure, as Amanda McArthur fired the first shot in the second minute. McArthur continued to test the Bruins' defense, hitting the top woodwork around the 19th minute. The Bearcats' persistence paid off when McArthur capitalized in the 27th minute, scoring the half's only goal to give Willamette a 1-0 lead.
George Fox managed a few attempts, notably a saved shot by Alexis Breer in the 16th minute, but was unable to break through Edwards' defense. Claire Warthen's late attempt in the 42nd minute was saved, yet the Bearcats maintained their advantage. The half closed with Willamette leading 1-0.
The second half began with the Bearcats maintaining offensive pressure, marked by consistent attempts on goal. McArthur's shot in the 51st minute was saved, but the momentum remained in Willamette's favor. Natalie Rodriguez-De La Torre broke the deadlock at the 71st minute, scoring to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Bearcats continued to dominate, with Morissa Donahue adding another goal in the 83rd minute, assisted by Erica Stotts. Despite a few attempts by the Bruins, including a shot saved by Sabella Pisicoli, the home team preserved their advantage. The half concluded with the Bearcats securing a 3-0 victory.
Rodriguez-De La Torre scored a goal with her only shot, contributing significantly to the team's offensive effort. Warthen led the team with four shots, two of which were on target, pressuring the opposing defense. McArthur added a goal and recorded seven shots, with two on target, including the game-winner. Stotts provided an assist, setting up a scoring opportunity for her teammates.
