Miller Leads Heptathlon, Colignon is Second in Decathlon, after First Day

SALEM, ORE. -- Brandi Miller (So., Grants Pass, OR/North Valley HS) of Willamette leads the heptathlon and Evin Colignon (Jr., Poulsbo, WA/Charles Wright Academy) of WU is second in the decathlon following the first day of competition in the multi-events at the Charles Bowles Spring Break Classic on Thursday, March 18. Action in the multi-events will conclude on Friday.

In addition to the multi-events, all of the other field events and running events at the Charles Bowles Spring Break Classic will be held on Friday. The meet is taking place at the Charles Bowles Track in Bush's Pasture Park.

Miller was in first place after four events in the heptathlon with 2,341 points. She owned a 36-point lead over Jennifer Roberts from Clackamas Community College, who earned 2,305 points. Ginny Hodges (Fr., San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) of Willamette was third with 2,085 points.

On Thursday, Miller won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.28 seconds. She placed second behind Roberts in the 200-meter dash. Roberts clocked in at 26.23 seconds and Miller concluded the race in 26.96 seconds.

Roberts also won the high jump, as she cleared 4'11". Addie Gallagher of Clackamas took first place in the shot put at 32'10.5", with Hodges in second place at 32'6.25".

The leader through five events in the decathlon was Dominick Walker who was competing unattached. Walker held a score of 3,584. Colignon followed in second with 3,338 points and James Ratliff of Clackamas Community College was third with 3,072 points.

Walker won the 100-meter dash in the decathlon with a time of 11.32 seconds. Colignon placed second at 11.71 seconds.

Walker also won the long jump at 22'7", the high jump at 6'3.5" and the 400-yard dash in 51.36 seconds. Colignon was the winner in the shot put with a throw of 45'0.5". He placed third in the long jump and the 400-meter dash, and tied for third in the high jump.

Colignon's distance in the shot put was just short of his personal best of 45'1.5", set last week during Willamette's dual meet against Southern Oregon University.

Events still to be held in the decathlon are the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter run. Remaining events in the heptathlon are the long jump, the triple jump and the 800-meter run. Action will begin on Friday at 9:15 a.m. (PDT) in the decathlon and at 10:15 a.m. in the heptathlon.
