Bearcats drop two close games
CMS wins the second game in the 10th
SALEM, Ore. — Willamette University (6-14, 3-7) faced Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (9-6-1, 4-3) in a doubleheader on Tuesday, suffering two hard-fought losses. In game one, the Bearcats fell narrowly 1-0, while in game two, they lost 4-3 in extra innings.
In the first game, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps secured the only run of the contest in the first inning. Delanie Stevens led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Avia Tuguldur's sacrifice fly brought Stevens home, establishing a 1–0 lead that remained intact throughout the game. Willamette's best chance to tie came in that same inning when Maris Pinheiro walked and advanced to third after two fielding errors, but the Bearcats stranded three runners. Emma Elliott also threatened in the second inning with a single and a stolen base, but the Bearcats could not convert these opportunities into runs.
Maya Filger pitched a complete game for the Bearcats, going 7 innings with 5 strikeouts and allowing just 1 earned run on 4 hits, but was tagged with the loss. Elliott contributed offensively with one hit and one stolen base, while Maggie Fleischmann added another hit. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Perri Derian excelled with a complete game shutout, yielding only 2 hits and 2 walks over 7 innings, highlighted by 14 groundouts.
In the second game, Willamette fell 4-3 after a closely contested battle that extended into extra innings. The Bearcats tied the game with two runs in the third inning and added another in the seventh to force extras. Emma Elliott again shined, singling and stealing second in the third, before Maya Filger's RBI single brought her home. McKenzee Petersen followed with an RBI double, giving Willamette a 2–0 lead. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps responded, and the Bearcats managed to tie it again in the seventh when Jade Kiyan scored on Pinheiro's single.
The game-winning run for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps came in the tenth inning when Alex Wedemeyer advanced from second to third on a sacrifice and scored on a groundout, giving them a 4–3 lead. Filger led Willamette's offense with two hits and one RBI. Kiyan contributed with a triple, a stolen base, and a run scored. Maddy Tuning pitched 4 innings, striking out 3 while allowing 2 earned runs, and Lizzie Brasher followed with 6 innings of work, giving up 2 runs and maintaining a low WHIP of 1.33. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Hannah Adams pitched a complete game for the victory, working through 10 innings with 11 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 5.
The Bearcats now hold an overall record of 6-14 and a conference record of 3-7, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps improves to 9-6-1 with a conference mark of 4-3.
