GEORGETOWN, Texas — Willamette University (2-3) fell to Southwestern University (7-4) with a final score of 6-3 on Friday at Taylor-Sanders Field. Willamette's offense was highlighted by a two-run second inning, but it was not enough to overcome Southwestern's six runs scored across the third and fourth innings. M. Petersen delivered a solo home run in the seventh inning to cap Willamette's scoring efforts.
Southwestern seized control in the third inning, capitalizing on two errors by the Bearcats to score three runs. A single by D. Clark and a two-RBI double from S. Ytuarte shifted momentum, turning a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead. The pressure continued as Southwestern added three more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from C. Collier, extending its lead to 6-2.
Willamette had earlier built a 2-0 advantage in the second inning. L. Stube homered to center field, and K. Angel delivered an RBI double to bring home J. Hopkins. Despite these efforts, the Bearcats' opportunities were limited in the following innings, as key chances slipped away with runners left on base in the third and sixth innings.
In the seventh inning, the Bearcats showed resilience when E. Elliott singled and later scored on a groundout by M. Atkins, narrowing the gap to 6-3. However, the late rally fell short as the final out was recorded with no further runs scored.
L. Stube made an impact with a home run and recorded an RBI in the game. J. Hopkins contributed with a walk and a stolen base while also reaching base on a hit. Petersen pitched a complete game, registering six assists and allowing seven hits. Angel doubled and drove in a run, adding to the team's offensive efforts.
Petersen pitched six innings for the Bearcats, allowing seven hits and six runs, with four of those being earned, while striking out one batter and walking one. Petersen was tagged with the loss, bringing their record to 2-1. For Southwestern, S. Ytuarte delivered a complete game over seven innings, conceding seven hits and three earned runs. Ytuarte issued three walks and struck out one, earning the win and improving to 2-2 on the season. Despite issuing a home run and a wild pitch, Ytuarte's performance was bolstered by strong run support.
The Bearcats have an overall record of 2-3. Southwestern holds a record of 7-4.
