Salem, Ore. - Willamette Softball split a pair of games with Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, winning the opening game 1-0 before dropping game two 11-0. Kenna Davis pitched another complete-game shutout for the Bearcats in game one and Faith Collar provided the lone run with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
The opening game was a pitching duel between Davis and the PLU starter Rachael Rhinehart. Each team was able to put runners on base in several innings, but Davis and Rhinehart found ways to keep their opponent off the scoreboard throughout most of the game.
In the opening inning, Willamette was able to load the bases with two outs, but Rhinehart was able to get Lauren Stube to ground out to end the inning. The Lutes were able to advance a runner to second base in each of the first five innings, but Davis was able to get the final out each time to keep the score tied 0-0.
Willamette was finally able to break through in the bottom of the first. With one out, Emma Elliott walked and stole second to put a runner in scoring position. After a strikeout for the second out, Collar singled past the shortstop to score Elliott and give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.
Davis retired six of the final seven batters to close out the game and earn her seventh win of the season. The Senior starter gave up seven hits and struck out five in the complete game.
Game two got off to a similar start as the first game, with neither team threatening in the opening innings against the PLU starter Paige Wilson and Elizabeth Hillier for Willamette.
This time it was the Lutes who would break out on top first, scoring three runs in the third and following that up with another run in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. PLU completely broke things open in the fifth when they scored seven runs to push the lead to 11-0.
After Willamette had five hits and several more baserunners in the opening game, only Jenna Hopkins (error) and Collar (walk) were able to reach base for the Bearcats in the second game as Wilson threw a no-hitter and the Lutes won 11-0.
The two teams will attempt to finish the series on Sunday, April 6th, if weather permits. The first game has been moved up to 10:00 am to hopefully avoid rain that is forecasted to start mid-afternoon.
