Accomplished Bearcats Earn Top Eight
Mucken concludes the events with second place overall
NEWBERG, Ore. — A trio of Bearcat multis competed in the NWC Multi Championships April 13-14 at George Fox University. In the Decathlon, athletes compete in ten events: the 100m, 110m Hurdles, 400m, 1500m, Discus, Javelin, Shot Put, Long Jump, High Jump, and Pole Vault. Out of the Bearcats, Steeley Mucken accumulated the most points and took second overall in the competition. Myles Crandall earned fourth place and Isaiah Martushev took seventh.
In the 100m, Mucken dashed past his opponents and took first in 10.86 seconds. In Long Jump and Shot Put he also earned first place, while in High Jump he was ousted and fell in second. In the 400m, Mucken took fourth place. The 110m Hurdles saw him regain his high-rankings by placing second. In addition to the hurdles, he also took second in Discus and Pole Vault, in the latter securing his spot by matching his personal best (PB) of 4.15 meters. In Javelin Throw, Mucken earned first place with a distance of 53.91 meters. The final event was the 1500m, where he placed eighth. In total, Mucken earned 6571 points for second place overall.
Crandall earned sixth in the 100m and fifth in Long Jump. In Shot Put, his first attempt of 11.44 meters (PB) earned him fourth place. He matched his season best (SB) of 1.76 meters in High Jump, taking sixth in that event as well. However, in the 400m, he earned third place. Crandall secured fourth in the 110m Hurdles the next day, while in Discus and Pole Vault he took sixth and seventh, respectively. In Javelin Throw, he also took seventh, but in the 1500m he outpaced the competition and achieved first place. Overall, Crandall earned 6095 points, which landed him fourth place in the Decathlon.
The final Bearcat competing in this competion, sophomore Martushev took ninth in the 100m and eighth in Long Jump. Shot Put saw him achieve a new PB of 10.44 meters, which landed him sixth place. In High Jump, he was unable to clear the first bar, but in the 400m run he came in at 54.77 seconds to earn fifth place. In the 110m Hurdles, Martushev got eighth, while in both Discus and Pole Vault he secured fifth place. He placed eighth in Javelin Throw and closed out the competition with fifth place in the 1500m. Martushev earned seventh place with a total of 4585 points.
