Bearcats fall just short of Loggers
Bronson, Sakaguchi, and Snyder with single wins
TACOMA, WA – In a match that came down to the thinnest of margins, the Willamette University men's tennis team displayed immense grit on the road Saturday, ultimately falling 4-3 to the University of Puget Sound. While the Bearcats took three of the six singles matches, the doubles point proved to be the deciding factor in the narrow defeat.
The afternoon began with a high-stakes battle for the doubles point. The Bearcats found success at the No. 2 spot, where the duo of Luca Casano and Sohnosuke Sakaguchi handled Gavin Dille and Jason Rowe with a 6-4 victory. However, the Loggers managed to steal the momentum at No. 1 and No. 3. The top flight was particularly heart-wrenching for the Bearcat faithful, as AJ Avansino and Hudson Snyder pushed their opponents to a tiebreaker before falling 7-6.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, Willamette refused to go quietly, showing the kind of resilience that has come to define this squad.
The highlight of the day belonged to Sohnosuke Sakaguchi at No. 3 singles. After dropping a tight first set 5-7, Sakaguchi forced a second-set tiebreaker to stay alive. In a marathon third-set pro-set that had both benches on their feet, Sakaguchi outlasted Puget Sound's Gavin Dille 11-9 to secure a thrilling point for the Bearcats.
He was joined in the win column by Jake Bronson, who put on a clinic of composure at the No. 2 spot. Bronson fended off Jackson Stumpf in back-to-back 7-5 sets to keep Willamette in the hunt. Hudson Snyder added to the tally at No. 4 singles, showing great stamina to roar back from a set down to defeat Vincent Unpingco 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Despite the heroics in the middle of the lineup, Puget Sound managed to clinch the match with victories at the No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 positions. Jack Hally nearly forced a third set at the No. 6 spot, battling through a 7-6 opening set before eventually falling.
While the final score wasn't in Willamette's favor, the Bearcats proved they could go toe-to-toe with anyone in the conference. The split in singles play (3-3) highlights a deep roster that is only a few points away from flipping the script.
The Bearcats will look to carry the momentum from their gritty singles performances into their next matchup as they continue their spring campaign.
