Bearcats Battle Hard Despite 6–1 Loss
Sohnosuke Sakaguchi with 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles
SALEM, OR – It was a day defined by grit and narrow margins at the Willamette tennis courts on Saturday. While the final 6-1 scoreline favored the visiting Lewis & Clark River Otters, the Willamette Bearcats pushed their Northwest Conference rivals to the brink in several high-intensity matches, proving they have the stamina to compete with the top of the pack.
The highlight of the afternoon for the home crowd came at No. 3 singles, where Sohnosuke Sakaguchi delivered a masterclass in composure. After battling through a grueling first-set tiebreaker to win 7-6, Sakaguchi found another gear in the second set. He dismantled Lewis & Clark's Kai Wills with precision, cruising to a 6-1 victory to secure a point for the Bearcats.
The match was much closer than the final team score suggested, as two other singles matches evolved into three-set marathons that could have swung the momentum in Willamette's favor.
At No. 4 singles, Hudson Snyder showed incredible heart. After dropping a tight first set 7-5, he roared back to take the second 6-4. In a back-and-forth deciding frame, Arnav Bishnoi managed to squeak out a 6-4 win to take the point for the River Otters. Similarly, at No. 2 singles, Jake Bronson forced a third set against Kaden Sigurdsson after a dominant 6-2 second-set performance, eventually falling 6-3 in the final frame.
At the top of the lineup, AJ Avansino went toe-to-toe with Noah Sutin. Though Sutin claimed the win, Avansino made him earn every point in a highly competitive 6-4, 7-5 battle.
In doubles action, the Bearcats faced an uphill climb early. The No. 3 duo of Jake Bronson and Jack Hally put up the strongest resistance, pushing Wade McDermott and Arnav Bishnoi to the limit before falling 7-5. Lewis & Clark ultimately swept the doubles round to take the opening point.
While the result goes down as a loss, the Bearcats' ability to force tiebreakers and third sets across the board signals a team that is trending in the right direction. Willamette will look to build on Sakaguchi's dominant performance and the team's overall resilience as they continue their spring campaign. They will face Puget Sound Univerisry Saturday, April 4th at 11:00am.
