Bearcats Battle in Tight Matches Despite 6–1 Loss to Whitworth
Hudson Snyder with doubles and singles wins
SALEM, OR — It was a day of "what-ifs" and gritty performances at the tennis courts on Saturday, as the Willamette Men's Tennis team displayed immense heart in a 6-1 loss to the visiting Whitworth Pirates. While the final scoreline favored the visitors, the Bearcats pushed the Pirates to the brink in several marathons, proving they can compete with the top tier of the conference.
The afternoon began with a massive statement at the top of the doubles lineup. The duo of AJ Avansino and Hudson Snyder put on a clinic at the #1 spot, showcasing seamless chemistry and powerful net play to defeat Whitworth's Ryan Ashley and Henry Preacher, 6-3. While the Pirates managed to clinch the overall doubles point with wins at the #2 and #3 positions, the victory at the top flight gave the Salem faithful plenty to cheer about heading into singles play.
In singles, the story of the day was the relentless resilience of Hudson Snyder. Competing at the #4 spot, Snyder engaged in the most dramatic match of the afternoon against Matt Hossack. After grinding out a 7-6 (7-3) win in a first-set tiebreaker and narrowly dropping the second set 5-7, Snyder refused to blink. In the deciding ten-point pro-set, Snyder found an extra gear, outlasting Hossack 10-8 to secure a well-deserved point for Willamette.
The Bearcats nearly flipped the script in several other matches that were decided by the slimmest of margins. At the #1 singles position, AJ Avansino went toe-to-toe with Whitworth's Henry Preacher in a three-set thriller. After a heartbreaking first-set tiebreaker loss, Avansino roared back to take the second set 6-4, eventually falling just short in the third-set tiebreaker.
Elsewhere, Jake Bronson (#2) and Luca Casano (#6) both pushed their opponents into deep waters, each battling through 7-5 sets that showcased the Bearcats' refusal to go down without a fight.
Though the Pirates (6-1) took the team win, the Bearcats showed that their top-end talent can match up with anyone in the NWC. Willamette will look to carry the momentum from Snyder's two-win day and Avansino's gritty performance into their next conference showdown. They face Pacific University Saturday, March 14th at 11:00 am, Willamette will be the away team in this event.
