Bearcats fall to Bruins 5-2
Jake Bronson wins at #2 Singles
SALEM, Ore. – In a hard-fought Northwest Conference clash at home, the Willamette Bearcats showed flashes of brilliance and a "never-quit" attitude before ultimately falling 5-2 to the visiting George Fox Bruins.
While the overall score favored the Bruins, the afternoon was highlighted by a dominant doubles performance and a gritty, three-set comeback victory that energized the Salem crowd.
Doubles Action
The Bearcats started the match with a statement at the No. 2 doubles spot. The duo of Luca Casano and Sohnosuke Sakaguchi put on a masterclass of precision and chemistry, dismantling George Fox's Keita Shoji and Bernardo Martinez in a flawless 6-0 sweep.
Despite the momentum at the No. 2 spot, the Bruins managed to claim the doubles point. The No. 3 pairing of Baily Livengood and Jake Bronson nearly forced a tiebreaker, battling through a deuce-heavy set before narrowly falling 7-5 to Luis Hernandez and Aiden Cruz.
Singles Highlights
In singles play, the Bearcats proved they could go toe-to-toe with the top of the Bruins' lineup. The performance of the day came from Jake Bronson at the No. 2 position. After dropping a tough first set 3-6 to Keita Shoji, Bronson completely flipped the script. Showing incredible conditioning and mental toughness, Bronson roared back to take the next two sets 6-1 and 6-0, essentially shutting down his opponent to secure a point for Willamette.
At the No. 6 spot, Luca Casano capped off a perfect personal day. Following his 6-0 doubles win, Casano remained dialed in during singles, defeating Jayden Lovingfoss in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Casano's ability to control the baseline was a major bright spot for the Bearcat faithful.
At the No. 3 spot, Sohnosuke Sakaguchi nearly forced a third set against Ikuho Ebisu. After a 6-3 loss in the first, Sakaguchi pushed the second set to the brink before falling in a tight 7-5 battle.
