Bearcats Show Grit in Hard-Fought Battle Against Wildcats
Jack Hally and Luca Casano come up short in doubles play
SALEM, Ore. – In a match defined by razor-thin margins and high-intensity rallies, the Willamette Men's Tennis team fell to the Linfield Wildcats 7-0 on Saturday. While the final scoreline favored the visitors, the Bearcats pushed Linfield to the brink in nearly every flight, proving they can go toe-to-toe with the top tier of the Northwest Conference.
The afternoon began with a doubles round that could have gone either way. After Linfield took the No. 1 spot, the Bearcats dug in their heels at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The duo of Baily Livengood and Jake Bronson (No. 2) and the pair of Jack Hally and Luca Casano (No. 3) both pushed their opponents to the limit. In a display of resilient net play and powerful serving, both matches reached a 5-5 deadlock before Linfield narrowly escaped with 7-5 wins to secure the doubles point.
The competitive fire continued into singles play, where the Bearcats refused to go down without a fight. The most dramatic battles of the day came at the No. 2 and No. 6 spots, both of which required third-set tiebreakers to decide a winner.
At No. 2 singles, Jake Bronson showcased incredible mental toughness. After dropping the first set 6-3, Bronson stormed back to take the second set 6-3, forcing a 10-point tiebreaker. Despite a valiant effort, Linfield's Zac Nakajima managed to pull away for a 10-4 win.
Similarly, at No. 6, Jake Freeland came out firing, taking the opening set 7-5 against Brandon Tran. Freeland's precision and baseline consistency kept the Bearcats' hopes alive, but Tran managed to flip the momentum in the second set and ultimately claimed the tiebreaker 10-2.
At the No. 3 spot, Hudson Snyder also kept the Salem crowd on their feet. Snyder battled through a grueling first set, falling just short at 7-5, before battling through a 6-4 second set in one of the most technical matches of the afternoon.
While the result wasn't what the home crowd hoped for, the Bearcats' performance against a perennial powerhouse like Linfield provides plenty of optimism. With two matches coming down to third-set tiebreakers and two doubles matches decided by a single break of serve, Willamette proved that they are just a few points away from a different outcome. The Bearcats will look to carry this competitive energy into their next conference matchup as they continue their campaign in the NWC. As they compete against George Fox University in a home match on February 21st at 3:00 pm.
