Willamette finds draw with Whitman
SALEM, Ore. — Willamette University and Whitman College played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Sparks Field. The Bearcats struck first with a goal in the 11th minute, but Whitman equalized in the second half. Willamette's defense held firm, with the goalkeeper making three saves in the second half to preserve the tie. Whitman outshot the Bearcats 20-11, but both teams managed only one goal each.
Rory McKee scored one goal and took four shots, contributing significantly to the Bearcats' offensive efforts. Brenden Pineda provided an assist and took three shots, one of which was on goal. Goalkeeper Mikkel Jensen made three saves and faced a total of 20 shots, allowing only one goal during his 90 minutes on the field.
The first half began with a balanced start, as both teams sought to establish control. Willamette capitalized on a key moment in the 34th minute when McKee scored, assisted by Pineda, breaking the deadlock to put the home team ahead. Despite several attempts by Whitman, the half concluded with the Bearcats maintaining a 1-0 lead.
The second half began with Whitman's offense testing the Bearcats' defense early. Jensen made crucial saves, notably stopping shots from Lucas McAllister and Adrian Valencia, maintaining a level scoreline. Despite multiple attempts from Whitman, including a shot by Alex Evans in the 79th minute, Jensen's efforts kept the match tight.
In the 85th minute, Remy Marcks broke the deadlock, scoring for Whitman and leveling the game at 1-1. Willamette pushed for a response, with McKee attempting a late shot, but the half ended with the score tied. The match concluded with both teams locked at 1-1.
The Bearcats stand at 3-5-7 overall with a conference record of 3-2-6. Whitman remains unbeaten at 8-0-5 overall and holds a 7-0-2 record in conference play.
The next challenge for the Bearcats will be at home as they face Whitworth University on Sunday, Oct. 19. The match will take place in Salem, OR, with kickoff set for 2:45 p.m.
