Bearcats At The Top After Opening Round

SALEM, Ore. – Playing on their home turf at Creekside Golf Club, the No. 13-ranked Willamette University men's golf team carded a 2-over-par 286 on Saturday to claim a narrow one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Willamette Valley Cup.

In a tightly contested field, the Bearcats [A] lead a surging pack that includes Whitman College [A] and Linfield University, who are tied for second at 3-over-par (287). Northwest Conference rivals Bushnell and Pacific Lutheran remain within striking distance, tied for fourth at 4-over-par (288).

The Bearcats were powered by senior leadership and consistent scoring across the "A" lineup. Brock Olson and Michael Baldwin led the way for Willamette, navigating the 6,426-yard Creekside course with poise.

"It's always a privilege to host the Willamette Valley Cup, and I'm proud of how our guys handled the pressure of Day One," said Head Coach Patrick Daugherty. "Holding a one-shot lead in this conference is never comfortable, but we've put ourselves in a great position to compete for the title tomorrow."

Willamette's depth was also on display as the Bearcat [B] squad finished the day in 10th place with a team score of 300 (+16), highlighted by competitive rounds from Lucas Paul and developmental players gaining valuable experience against a high-caliber DIII field.

Individual Highlights:

• Brock Olson and Michael Baldwin anchored the 'A' team, maintaining their status as top-ranked individuals in Region VII.

• AJ Papajohn and Jack Carr contributed crucial scores to keep the team total at 286.

• Lucas Paul led the 'B' team with a solid 78 (+7).
