SPOKANE, Wash. — In the Northwest Conference Championships game, Willamette (16-11, 10-6 NWC) fell to Whitworth (22-5, 14-2 NWC) 97-87 in a competitive matchup at Whitworth Fieldhouse. Willamette's offense was led by a strong second-half performance, scoring 55 points, but it was not enough to overcome Whitworth's efficient shooting and 24 assists. Despite forcing 10 steals, Willamette could not bridge the 14-point deficit established in the first half.
Whitworth capitalized on Willamette's 10 turnovers in the first half, converting them into 10 points and establishing a significant lead. Despite the Bearcats' strong inside presence with 14 points in the paint, Whitworth's shooting efficiency was notable, as it converted 53 percent from the field compared to Willamette's 39 percent. The home team also dominated the boards, securing 19 rebounds to the Bearcats' 16, contributing to its 46-32 advantage at the end of the half.
Whitworth maintained its lead in the second half, despite being outscored by the Bearcats 55-51. Willamette capitalized on turnovers, converting 12 points off turnovers, and secured a plus-three edge in total rebounds. Tanner Overby led the charge for the Bearcats with consistent scoring, including three 3-pointers. However, Whitworth's efficient free-throw shooting, hitting 17 of 22 attempts, helped it secure a 97-87 victory.
The Bearcats end the season with a record of 16-11 overall and 10-6 in NWC play. Whitworth stands at 22-5 overall and 14-2 in the NWC.
