SALEM, Ore. — Willamette (15-9, 10-5 NWC) secured an 83-69 victory over Pacific University (10-16, 6-10 NWC) at Cone Field House on Friday night. Willamette maintained a steady lead throughout, highlighted by a strong performance in the paint, scoring 36 points. The Bearcats also capitalized on second-chance opportunities, adding 23 points. Despite Pacific's effort to close the gap, including 42 points in the paint, Willamette's balanced scoring and rebounding advantage sealed the win.
Willamette finished the first half with a 43-38 lead over Pacific, leveraging a strong offensive output to stay ahead. The Bearcats' bench contributed significantly with 19 points compared to Pacific's 15, while also maintaining a 22 to 15 advantage in total rebounds, which helped in second-chance scoring opportunities. Despite committing 12 turnovers, Willamette managed to offset this with effective shooting from beyond the arc, converting four 3-pointers. Tanner Overby was instrumental in the paint, scoring multiple key baskets, including a fast-break layup at 1:30, to maintain the lead going into halftime.
Willamette capitalized on strong bench contributions, outscoring Pacific 17-5 in bench points during the second half. The Bearcats connected on 13 of 36 field goals, including four 3-pointers, while Pacific struggled from the field, making just 9 of 32 attempts. Willamette also maintained a slight edge in rebounding, securing 25 boards to Pacific's 24. At the end of the half, the scoreboard read Willamette 83, Pacific 69.
Willamette has a record of 15-9 overall and 10-5 in NWC play. Pacific stands at 10-16 overall and 6-10 in the NWC.
Looking ahead, the Bearcats are set to face Lewis and Clark University on Saturday, Feb. 21. The game will take place in Portland, Oregon, with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m. Willamette will be on the road for this matchup.
