Bearcats pick up 88-78 conference win over Puget Sound
TACOMA, Wash. — The Willamette University basketball team secured a crucial 88-78 conference victory over the University of Puget Sound on Friday at Memorial Fieldhouse. The Bearcats held a 41-30 lead at halftime and maintained their advantage with a strong 47-point second half. They capitalized on turnovers, scoring 21 points from UPS's 23 turnovers, while also recording 14 steals in the game.
Willamette established a strong first-half lead with efficient shooting, converting 60 percent from the field and draining five 3-pointers. The visiting Bearcats capitalized on the Loggers' 13 turnovers, scoring 10 points off those opportunities, while also maintaining a defensive edge with eight steals. At the end of the half, Willamette led 41-30.
The Bearcats built a commanding lead early in the second half by converting strong defensive plays into points, highlighted by a 3-pointer and a fast-break layup from Kellen Sande, pushing the score to 49-31 with 18:07 remaining. Willamette effectively capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, making 18 of 23 attempts, while UPS struggled with turnovers, committing 10. Despite the Loggers' late rally, including nine 3-pointers, Willamette's consistent scoring in the paint and efficient shooting maintained their advantage, closing the half with an 88-78 victory.
The Bearcats improved to 12-9 overall and 7-5 in NWC play. UPS is now 13-8 overall and 8-4 in NWC competition.
The next challenge for the Bearcats is a matchup against Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday, Feb. 7. The game will tip off at 5 p.m. at Olson Gymnasium in Tacoma, Washington, as Willamette steps onto the court as the visiting team.
