Bearcats persevere against Boxers
A tightly-contested Willamette victory, scored 75-74
FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Willamette University (10-7, 5-3 NWC) edged Pacific University (OR) (6-12, 2-6 NWC) 75-74 in a closely contested conference matchup at the Stoller Center. The Bearcats secured the victory with a strong defensive presence, recording 11 steals and 7 blocks. The game featured three ties and eight lead changes, with Willamette's 14 three-pointers proving decisive in the narrow win.
Willamette established a solid lead in the first half, driven by an impressive performance from their bench, contributing 23 points. The visitors demonstrated accuracy from beyond the arc, converting nine 3-pointers, which countered the Boxers' eight steals. Despite being outrebounded 24-17 by Pacific, the Bearcats' efficiency in shooting 48 percent from the field helped them close the half ahead 42-33.
Willamette and Pacific engaged in a tightly contested second half, with the Bearcats ultimately closing out the session narrowly ahead. Willamette's strong perimeter play, highlighted by five 3-point conversions, propelled their scoring despite the Boxers' 41-point effort. Tanner Overby played a crucial role, contributing a late layup and free throw with 1:05 remaining to regain the lead. Both teams were evenly matched in turnovers, each tallying six, as the half ended with Willamette leading 75-74.
The Bearcats improved to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in NWC play after their narrow victory. The Boxers are now 6-12 overall and 2-6 in NWC competition.
In their next matchup, the Bearcats will host George Fox University on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. at their home venue in Salem, Oregon.
