Bearcats clash with Pilots
PORTLAND, Ore. — The Willamette University basketball team fell to the University of Portland 120-83 on Monday night at Chiles Center. Despite a strong start, with Willamette scoring 56 points in the first half, Portland's offensive efficiency proved overwhelming. The Bearcats hit 13 three-pointers but struggled to contain Portland in the paint, where they conceded 60 points. Willamette's bench contributed 35 points, but Portland's depth was evident with 55 points from their reserves.
Willamette's reliance on the 3-point shot kept them competitive, converting 12 of 23 attempts from beyond the arc. Despite a strong bench contribution of 28 points, they trailed 63-56 at the end of the first half. Portland capitalized on turnovers, scoring 15 points off Willamette's 11 turnovers, and dominated in the paint with 32 points.
In the second half, Portland outscored the Bearcats 57-27, capitalizing on a shooting discrepancy. Willamette struggled with a 23 percent field goal percentage, including 5 percent from beyond the arc, while Portland converted 52 percent of their shots. Portland's 20 made free throws further extended their lead, despite Willamette's efforts in generating seven offensive rebounds. The game concluded with Portland leading 120-83.
Tanner Overby was a top performer for Willamette, scoring 18 points with six rebounds and three steals. Anujan Tennathur follows him with 14 points scored and 4 assists. Tyler Stringfellow scored 12 points and made 2 assists.
Up next for the Bearcats is a home contest against LaVerne University on Friday, Nov. 7. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at their home court in Salem, Oregon.
