Doug Pierce is in his sixth year as a coach with the Willamette University cross country teams and is in his seventh year with the Willamette track and field teams in 2018-19. He previously coached track and field at Moscow High School in Idaho. As the head coach at Moscow, he guided the Bears to five regional championships. As an assistant, he helped coach the Moscow boys' team to a 4A Idaho State Championship in 2008.

He began his coaching career as an assistant basketball coach at Reedsport High school in 1972. He became an assistant track coach in 1973 and coached cross country and track as the head coach from 1975 to 2000, winning over 20 District titles.

Pierce taught school in Oregon and Idaho for 35 years after graduating from Western Oregon University and the University of Idaho. His award winning bands were well-known for their enthusiasm and passion for music.

As an athlete, Pierce played football, basketball and baseball at Reedsport in high school.  He played four years of basketball at Western Oregon.

A 1966 graduate of Western Oregon, Pierce also earned a master's degree from the University of Idaho in 1974.
